Our Annual General Meeting on Sunday 16th March at 1200, will be followed by
a Special General Meeting at which we’ll be voting on two important matters affecting how you and others use the club.
- OBTAINING A PREMISES LICENCE
The problem in a nutshell
Our current Club Premises Certificate dictates that only members can buy alcohol. So, we are technically in breach of our licence at many of our social and sports events such as bingo, wakes, discos, darts & snooker when non-members attend and buy alcohol.
The solution
Hackney Council has written to us suggesting that we are breaching our current certificate. We are therefore seeking members’ approval to adopt a full Premises License.
Other social clubs in the same situation as ourselves have also adopted this licence.
What will this change?
Almost nothing!
The way the club is run will stay the same. The club will still be a members’ club, with members benefitting from reduced priced drinks and a wide range of music events as well as exclusive member only events such as Christmas lunch and the summer coach trip.
The only real changes
Your guests and non-members, such as sports teams, would be able to buy alcohol. Non-members would also be able to buy tickets and attend events, with discount prices for members as before.
- UPDATING OUR RULE BOOK
The Club & Institute Union (CIU), our umbrella body, provides a set of rules that govern how we operate.
The problem
We’re currently using an old set of rules that are out of date and no longer refer to current legislation.
The solution
The CIU has updated its rules to reflect changes in the law governing clubs and we need to adopt them to be compliant – since 1888 we have always adopted the latest CIU rules.
What are the changes that affect you?
- Guests can buy drinks – as long as we update the current licence as well
- New members can stand for committee after 6 months. It’s currently 2 years
- The limit of three guests per member is removed in the new rules, but we’ll hold a committee vote to retain it
- Life members don’t have to pay £3.50 for their annual pass card
- Members can’t be charged for a copy of the rules
- We no longer need to have an official ‘engraved’ club seal in our custody, signatures will do!
For these motions to pass, we need two-thirds of those present to vote in favour.
REMEMBER, YOU HAVE TO BE AT THE MEETING TO MAKE YOUR VOTE COUNT!
