There’s a long tradition of members forming their own interest groups within the Mildmay Club. Our records show such clubs as the Mildmay Chums, Mildmay Nuts*, Rifle Club, the Fur & Feather society, Angling society, Cycle club, Rowing, Ramblers and Cricket clubs, and the Flower Boys* (*we have no idea what these groups did, but the Archive group are investigating!).
So why not get together with people with similar interests by joining one of our existing groups? Can’t see what you’re interested in? Then consider starting your own group within the Club. Read on to find out how.
Existing Club Interest Groups
- Archive Group
The Archive group are a group of members interested in preserving and sharing the club’s history. Their work varies from cataloging the Club’s vast paper archive of documents to organising or taking part in events to share their findings.
Meets on the first Sunday of the month (sometimes moved due to bank holidays). - Board Games Group
A group of members who meet monthly to play a variety of games.
Meets on the second Monday of the month in the TV/Pool room. - Back yard project group
A new group working on plans to develop the Club’s back yard.

We also have numerous sports leagues and groups.
You must be a Club member to join these groups.
Setting up a new group
Can’t see a group you’re interested in? Then consider setting up your own. Here’s how:
- Read the information below on our criteria for setting up new groups and what support we can offer members wanting to set-up groups, as well as the rules we’d expect your group to abide by.
- If that all sounds ok, complete the application form outlining your idea. You don’t need to have all the answers now. If other members also contact us with the same or similar idea we’ll put you in touch with them to work up your idea.
- We’ll get back to you within a week
You must be prepared to lead on the creation and organisation of the new group as the support the Committee and Manager can offer you is limited.
To meet our criteria new groups must:
- Likely appeal to more than 5 people
- Not require hireable space free-of-charge on a regular basis
- Not require space to leave equipment in
- Not go against the Club’s code of conduct
- Be for leisure purposes or for the purpose of supporting the club’s operations
- Not be the same as an existing group
- Not charge members
Endorsement of Interest Groups by the Club’s Committee is at its own discretion. The Committee reserve the right to decline to endorse a proposed Interest group without giving a reason.
What support can you expect from the Club
The club will support groups in the following ways:
- Promotion of the group via our website and social media channels, newsletter, WhatsApp and monthly inclusion in our newsletter
- Set-up of a dedicated WhatsApp group within the Club’s community of groups
- Posters can be displayed on a dedicated noticeboard in the Members’ Bar (TBC). The club doesn’t have the resource to design your poster, but can offer a basic template. The design will be subject to approval by the Club manager.
- Reserved areas for meetings in the members bar (only at quieter times, i.e. Saturday & Sunday daytime, and Monday evenings, and at the managers discretion)
- Financial support for materials on a case-by-case basis (for any groups supporting the running of the group, rather than leisure groups)
- A main point of contact on the Committee to answer questions and offer advice. Please note that this person won’t lead your group or attend meetings and is purely a liaison between you and the Club.
