Pegwell Bay convalescent home opens

The CIU opens its first Convalescent Home for members at Pegwell Bay in Kent. The Mildmay’s Jesse Argyle is joint-originator of the scheme which goes on to build two more Homes around the country which give respite and special care to thousands of members recovering from serious or chronic illness

Ralph Manley is appointed Secretary of the Mildmay Radical Club

Alfred Allen steps in

Efforts to finance the purchase of 34 Newington Green flounder, and club member and architect Alfred Allen steps in to buy the freehold from the Club Trustees in his own name, and leases it back to the club. At the same time he also buys the adjoining property at 33 Newington Green and begins to draw up plans for the construction of a new clubhouse.

Membership of the club reaches 700

The search for new premises

A subcommittee is formed to seek out new larger premises for the club. They identify a large mansion, with 12 rooms and spacious grounds at 34 Newington Green.

The Mildmay Club joins the CIU

The Mildmay Club becomes fully affiliated to the CIU (Clubs and Institute Union) with Jesse Argyle appointed as the club’s delegate there

Jesse Argyle becomes Chairman

Jesse Argyle becomes Chairman of the Mildmay Committee. Argyle is private secretary to Charles Booth, the first of whose groundbreaking social survey series The Life and Labour of the People in London is about to be published.

The club opens

On August 1st, 1888, the Mildmay Radical Club and Institute opens its doors to some thirty members. By November that number had grown to 240.

The club’s first official premises

Agreement is reached to rent the furnished premises at 36 Newington Green Road, from the owner, the Ball’s Pond Secular Hall Society. To get things going, loans in the form of bonds, typically for £1, are raised from 15 founding members.
